MARIA ESTABANELL

Born in Barcelona Maria Estabanell’s artwork explores the human body, the environment that surrounds her and the absence of quiet moments, all contained within the memory of her childhood growing up in a Mediterranean country.  As a woman, her gaze can be nothing other than female, yearning for a deep presence of skin, bodies, obscured or even hidden, in the manifestation of her images. An allusion to love, the female shape, and nature.

Her approach to photography and film goes beyond the art of observation, focusing on the present and stepping into the world of intimacy as a witness. Some of her images act as a visual diary documenting herself and those closest to her. In her most recent projects, the London based visual artist observes the body as a sculpture in itself - capturing the skin, the flesh and the bone-.  A part of her work feels a need to examine the fine line that separates the imagination from the reality. Always looking for what’s inside and outside of herself.
